First I'll be needin' yer full name, honey. It's for my confidential records. Lord knows none o' the girls actually uses 'em.
*nods and speaks politely with a British accent* Alice Elizabeth Clarice Roberts.
So what do people actually call ya? An' why?
Simply Alice will do. I’ve never been called anything else - my old nanny would call me Miss Alice, but Alice will do fine. I wouldn’t say no to a nickname if someone starts calling me by one though.
Age an' birthday? Just estimate if ya ain't sure, hon.
I’ll be 15 this year, May 23rd.
Now you's gonna give me a physical description. Height, build, hair, eyes, the clothes ya wears--everythin' down to the last freckle, ya hear? *gives you a sober look* If one o' my goils goes missin'...well, it pays to be prepared, I always say.
I am 5’4" with a slender frame, I have dark blue eyes and honey blonde hair. It’s curly but manageable. I suppose what I wear is very simple, a white blouse…though it isn’t as white anymore as it once was. A dark skirt. *smiles softly* It’s a bit raggedy but it makes do. See, I’ve added some flowers in with embroidery thread. I don’t wear it, but my most treasured possession would be a hair clip, it’s lovely and it used to be my mother’s. If the occasion is right, I’ll wear it.
I know you'll be sellin' papes, but are ya doin' any odder kinda work? If so, I gotta know about it. *gives you a sharp look* Yes, even that.
No ma’am! *eyes wide* I’d never. *quiet voice* I don’t like men, they’re frightening. I just sell papers. If you know anyone who needs a house cleaner or something sewn, I can do that.
What's yer personality like, dearie? Sweet, grumpy, shy, outgoin', overly fond o' the boys? *smiles* It's all perfectly fine here in Greenwich Village.
Well, let’s see. I’ve been told I am soft spoken, sometimes they tell me I’ll never sell papers with a voice like mine, but I manage. I can be a bit timid sometimes but I am good natured, gentle and kind. I love helping others and taking care of the place that is providing me with a roof over my head. I take pride in my work because I know if I didn’t I wouldn’t get by. I’m faithful to my friends and the church.
Now, most o' the Village is real keen on the arts. Got any special talents I should know about? If ya sing, dance, act, draw, paint, write, or sweep a stage, I guarantee the goils'll find ya some extra work. *winks* You can tell me about any non-artistic talents while you's at it.
Well ma’am, I read and write. I’m very skilled at embroidery. I use to ride horses when I was younger, but when we moved to America I had to give that up. I’ve been told I have a very sweet singing voice, and I do enjoy singing. *blushes*
Any ghosts hauntin' ya that I should know about? I don't mean the kind that supposedly haunts the attic--I mean the bad things that follow ya from yer past, or the bad habits ya just can't seem to shake.
*shakes head* No ma’am, I would do nothing to harm my body, the church is against it. I won’t smoke, drink or gamble. *hesitates* I think that’s all I need to tell you.
Who ya know in the area, hon? Friend or foe, I wanna hear about it. An' have ya got any fam'ly left?
I don’t know anyone in the area. *looks down at her hands* I do have family left, in England and my…*bites her lip* my uncle is out here.
Seein' anyone special, dear? *smiles slyly*
No, I’m nervous of boys. I don’t trust them.
Now, last of all, baby, I need ya to tell me why you's here. Where'd ya come from, an' what kinda life did ya have before?
I was born in England - to be exact: Stratford-upon-Avon. That is a small market town in the county of Warwickshire in the English Midland. Yes, it’s the hometown of Shakespeare. *smiles a little* I was born to a middle class family, so I am educated. My father was Charles Roberts and my mother was Clarice. I had a brother, Edwin Roberts. When I turned 11 my parents decided that we would move to America. My-my uncle moved out here a few years before and told them that he had gotten a decent business going and wanted my father’s help. Edwin stayed behind; he was already 18 and engaged. I went with them to America. *grows quiet* My parents ended up getting sick on the boat ride over and they passed away. My uncle came and took me in. It was fine, until I turned 13. His business was failing and he took to drinking. When I was 14…*stops mid-sentence and bits her lip* he…he…*on the verge of tears* I’m sorry, I can’t say it. (Alice’s uncle beat and raped her.) I had to leave, I ran away and never looked back. I’ve been making my way to New York City ever since, I heard that maybe I could have better luck finding work here. I’d just like a place to stay while I sell papers and it seems like a friendly group of girls here. *smiles softly*
